This past week at a Chicago ton hall that was held by Rev. Al Sharpton to discuss ways to solve issues of violence, etc. in the communities. But Sharpton got much more than he bargained for as many community leaders expressed outrage at machine type politicians whom they know are the cause of the mess that they were meeting to solve.
Watching some of the comments made at the town hall below. One of the best ones comes from and 82 year-old preacher who said that they need to have town halls like the Republicans have, like the Tea Party, in which people are serious about issues.
One of the people who spoke was Paul MKinely, a former candidate for congress to replace the seat left open by Jesse Jackson Jr. He called for the president to take the man he sent (Rahm Emanuel) who became the mayor of Chicago back. In his comments to Al Sharpton and the collected group of organizers he said, “Stop blaming just anybody for the violence in the city of Chicago. Blame the right people, not just white people, but the right people. Because it’s not just white folks a part of this, but it is on the fifth floor. The fifth floor took your schools, the fifth floor just took your jobs that he said that he gave to the ex-offender… and every single alderman was a part of this criminal process.”
“The manner in which we have been voting needs to change,” Wendy Pearson, an activist against Chicago school closings, told the room. “I’m here to say to you that we have been trained to vote in a specific manner… we need to start looking at the manner in which our elected officials have been voting… if they have not voted in a manner that is beneficial to you, yours, and your community, then you need to start voting them out.”
It is wonderful to see that black leaders in Chicago are speaking out against a broken system that everyone who were stuck in it are no realizing is bad and has been helping no one. And if the citizens of the very liberal Chicago and it’s suburbs can realize the errors in the politicians they have elected and change the negative tide, then there is hope for all of America.
