The first presidential debate of the election season went by very fast, at least for me. There many good points made and Mitt Romney hit Pres. Obama good on the things that mattered. They both went overtime on multiple occasions but then, Jim Lehrer is not the best moderator…he let the beginning fifteen minute segment run past twenty-one minutes before stopping both to move on to the next topic.
Pres. Obama floundered throughout the debate, never looking at Romney when he spoke and seeming to be rather irritable at some points. He did what he does best and told stories using his grandparents this time. Using his grandmother in his talking points on social security and medicare. He even ignored some of Lehrer’s questions and sometimes didn’t respond to Romney’s statement.
Romney looked very presidential tonight in his answers and responses to Obama’s attacks, and was knowledgeable on all the topics. He hit Obama well on failed subsidies like Solyndra, and told the president that he doesn’t pick the winners and losers, he just picks the losers. He got on the point of repealing the Dodd/Frank bill, which no one discussed until this point. And about taking away subsidies for things like PBS and cutting down on and combining government entities to reduce the deficit and get the budget on track.
Basically, Mitt Romney looked comfortable and in his element ion the debate. While Pres. Obama looked worn and upset and just gave us all of his stump speeches and sayings in an hour and a half segment.
The liberal media, which are usually quick to come the defense of their man didn’t have much to say tonight. Some are blaming Jim Lehrer as their way of getting around the topic of Obama’s terrible debate performance. Chris Matthews and Bill Maher seemed to give in to the fact that their did badly tonight. No one stood up for Obama. CNN/ORC had a poll done immediately after the debate to determine who won the debate, with 67% of respondents saying that Mitt Romney won, and 25% saying that Obama, the rest were undecided. That’s probably not the results that they were hoping to see from that poll.
If this was a sign of things to come, then the Vice Presidential debate between Paul Ryan and Joe Biden is going to be a slaughter.
