In the days following Rick Santorums departure from the presidential race, many people (me included) have been upset and grieving. But we are now past that stage and recent news out of Colorado is showing our resilience.
Just this week, Colorado held the elections for their delegates. In the congressional elections for delegates, Ron Paul supporters came out and did surprisingly well. Gaining two out of the three spots for the Eastern Slopes congressional district, and reportedly did well in the Denver and Eastern Plains districts. The Romney Colorado campaign was surprised by these results, as they had probably expected to sweep the delegate races.
The events leading up to the delegate election is what surprised the Romney campaign and Republican establishment the most.
Sometime after Rick Santorum suspended his campaign, his state chairman and several key supporters in Colorado, joined with the Ron Paul supporters. Making a combined effort to keep Romney from gaining all of the Colorado delegates, and they succeeded.
These actions prove just how much fight there is in the conservative movement, to keep Mitt Romney from being our nominee. In no way has he become the nominee yet. He has not even reached the necessary 1,144 delegates to become the nominee. Only in the eyes of the Republican establishment is this race over.
I would not be surprised if more people kept voting for Rick Santorum, even though he is out of the race. And some even going over to vote for Ron Paul. All in one voice to send a clear message to the party. That we are fed up with their candidates, and we will no longer sit down and take it.
Even if Ron Paul or Rick Santorums supporters do not get a large enough delegate count to take the nomination. They could take enough away from Mitt getting the nomination outright, and turn it into a brokered convention. In which case the nomination is up for grabs to any person in the party.
